The traditional, slow-paced, and leisurely lifestyle of these Old Streets represents an idealized vision of life for many. Compared to fleeting moments captured in images or the self-contained worlds within viewfinders, the "spirit of everyday life" in Songyang's Old Streets arises from and exists within the broader and more ordinary context of daily life.
Located in the mountainous area of southwestern Zhejiang, at the cultural intersection of Zhejiang and Fujian, Songyang showcases a rich blend of cultures. Its past limitations in accessibility and economic development have afforded it the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with time, preserving the complete layout of ancient villages and towns, along with a wealth of intangible cultural heritage. Today, it stands as a "Classical Chinese County Prototype" and "the Last Secret Realm of Southern Yangtze." At the core of Songyang County, the Old Streets were recognized in 2022 as one of China's Intangible Cultural Heritage tourist districts. Numerous artisans and cultural inheritors actively contribute to the area's vibrancy. Their presence, skills, and interactions with materials in the Old Streets create a lively, communal atmosphere, drawing many visitors.
The clang and clatter of hammering, the whirring of grinding, the ceaseless flames of stoves year-round, and the alluring aroma of food wafting through the old streets... These elements compose the unique landscape of Songyang's Old Streets, shaped by the bearers of its historical and cultural legacy.

In its online iteration, the website for "Being Heard" reconstructs and expands upon the physical exhibition. It will feature a comprehensive array of content, including recordings of the entire creative and exhibition process, the seven simultaneous short films, and detailed profiles of the seven cultural inheritors featured in the project. Here, the focus of "Being Heard" is not only on the sounds of the Old Street's tools but also on the local cultural inheritors' physical embodiment of the continuation of their traditions. It represents a confluence of diverse perspectives on the development of heritage tourism and cultural inheritance in the Old Streets. Moreover, it serves as a platform for architects to explore and discuss the renewal and rejuvenation of similar historic street spaces, fostering a dialogue that bridges traditional heritage with modern architectural and cultural insights.
In August 2023, captivated by the vibrant "spirit of everyday life" in Songyang's Old Streets, Studio RE+N and heritage scholars initiated "Being Heard," a multi-dimensional audio-visual exhibition. This exhibition was unique in its approach: it involved no professional directors or scriptwriters. Instead, seven cultural inheritors from the Old Streets of Songyang were invited to co-create seven short films through Participatory Video Making (PVM). These films showcased the intimate relationship between individual life practices and the local ambiance and culture, offering innovative and critical perspectives on interpreting the essence of the locale. "Being Heard" represents an experimental, collaborative endeavour on the ground, uniting architects, urban and rural planners, heritage scholars, and local cultural inheritors. Together, they embarked on a journey to authentically capture and convey the rich cultural narrative of Songyang, blending traditional wisdom with contemporary insights.

The main exhibition hall of "Being Heard" replicates the immersive video hall of the offline exhibition, featuring seven juxtaposed short films shot by local photographers. These films focus on the everyday lives of the cultural inheritors, inviting them to "direct" their own film. Guided by the method of Participatory Video Making, "everyday life" emerges as the outcome of a multitude of viewpoints. This theme is not only conveyed through the films but also open for all participants to define.
The films prompt a reflection: if "we" are defined as modern individuals chasing the relentless urban clock, then the inheritors appear as "them," living according to a different time system, representing a pre-modern, slower-paced life with an eternal aesthetic. But are "we" and "they" truly such distinct groups? The everyday life depicted in the films may offer an answer to this question.
As viewers engage with these juxtaposed films, they can delve deeper into the world of each cultural inheritor by clicking the ‘+’ buttons below the videos. This interactive element offers a more intimate and comprehensive understanding of the lives and perspectives of those who keep the cultural heartbeat of the Old Streets alive.

Tradition and modernity are not exclusive to certain groups but exist in everyone's daily lives, creating a tapestry of shared experiences and unique differences. In Songyang, this interplay shapes a culture that fosters connections and dialogue among all. The living heritage of Songyang's Old Streets thrives on these individual life experiences, highlighting the collective and connective power within the dynamics of "you," "us," and "them."
